The Christmas celebrations started with the Christingle service at Gt Leighs church. It was well supported by children with their families. The children made Christingles as part of the service. They were given a bag holding all the sweets, candle etc and an orange each. Someone dressed up as a Christingle in an inflatable orange suit to much amusement! The children took a Christingle home, although many had been consumed before leaving the church.
The Carol Service was held this year at Lt Leighs and led by our choir and various musicians. All the old favourites were sung and less known ones sung by the choir. The story of Christmas was read by members of the church. Afterwards we enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies.
On Christmas Eve there was the Crib Service at Lt Waltham. It was standing room only for this extremely popular service on Christmas Eve.
Midnight Communion, to celebrate Communion as soon as the clock struck midnight, is always a special time, and so it was this year. Over 50 people came to St Mary’s.
As well as services we also went carol singing in the run up to the big day. We invited the people from the Free Church and together we sang in The Castle pub with those who were having a pre Christmas meal. It was so well received we have been invited to come again next year on 2 nights! We collected for C.H.E.S.S. and think we did very well. Before the pub some went to our housebound congregation and sang to them outside their houses. They were very grateful for this and were quite emotional about it. We DO miss them all at the services.
